"Purpose-Built for Defense"
Teal Drones builds American-made military-grade small UAS for defense reconnaissance and national security, now a Red Cat Holdings subsidiary.
Teal Drones is a U.S.-based manufacturer of military-grade small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) founded in 2014 by George Matus in Salt Lake City, Utah. Acquired by Red Cat Holdings (NASDAQ: RCAT), Teal Drones focuses exclusively on defense and government applications, producing American-made sUAS that comply with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) requirements, ensuring no components from adversary nations are used in its supply chain.
The company's flagship product is the Black Widow, a compact quadcopter weighing 1.63 kg selected for the U.S. Army Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) Program of Record. Black Widow achieves a flight time of over 35 minutes, a range of 8 km, and a maximum speed of 10 m/s. Its primary payload is a dual EO/IR camera system combining a 64-megapixel visible-light camera and a Boson+ 640 radiometric infrared sensor, both mechanically stabilized. The system incorporates AES-256 encrypted video and command-and-control links, anti-jamming electronic warfare countermeasures, autonomous forward-looking obstacle avoidance, and Qualcomm RB5-powered AI capabilities. The modular architecture allows rapid payload swapping to adapt to diverse mission profiles. In September 2025, the Black Widow System was approved and added to the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) catalogue, enabling NATO member procurement. Teal Drones achieved AS9100 aerospace and defense quality certification in August 2025.
Beyond Black Widow, the Red Cat Family of Systems includes TRICHON, a fixed-wing VTOL for extended endurance and range, and FANG, an NDAA-compliant FPV drone optimized for military precision-strike applications. FlightWave Aerospace, another Red Cat subsidiary, produces the Edge 130 tricopter for extended short-range mapping and ISR with tool-free payload swapping. Teal's manufacturing is conducted entirely in the United States, with operations at its Salt Lake City facility.
