Company Overview

Subsea Mechatronics S.L. (SSM) is a technology company based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, founded in 2015 by CEO Darío Sosa Cabrera and CTO Luis Sanchez. The company specialises in the design, manufacture, and operation of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and remote-sensing platforms for inspection, maintenance, and data collection in extreme submerged and confined environments such as flooded pipes, dams, tunnels, and port infrastructure.

SSM's business model spans both product sales and Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS): clients may purchase ROV systems outright or contract SSM to deliver inspection and cleaning campaigns using SSM's own fleet. The company also offers custom robotic solution development, 3D design, prototyping, and product industrialisation services.

The core product fleet includes several specialised platforms:

  • ROV FULA: a compact open-water and confined-space inspection vehicle suitable for port inspections, outfall surveys, and environmental monitoring campaigns.
  • ROV SAMA: a mid-size inspection vehicle compatible with the PIPEYE Visualizer software system for real-time pipeline visualisation.
  • ROV XERNE: a larger survey ROV equipped for advanced marine data acquisition.
  • CRAWLER ROV SOLEA: a tracked, compact crawler vehicle engineered for flooded pipeline interiors, capable of operating in near-zero visibility conditions; used for inspecting and cleaning water supply pipes.
  • Fixed IoT Monitoring Platforms: stationary underwater sensor arrays deployed for long-term industrial process monitoring in submerged installations.

SSM's navigation technology leverages Water Linked underwater GPS positioning systems, enabling precise localisation inside pipelines and confined spaces where conventional GPS is unavailable. The company has worked with industrial clients including Iberdrola, supporting the inspection and cleaning of pipelines in thermal power plants — one of the first uses of a custom submersible ROV for this application.

SSM is a member of SPRINT Robotics, the global consortium for inspection and maintenance robotics, whose supporters include Shell, Dow, and Mitsubishi. The company is headquartered at Marine Park Bajos de la Playa de las Alcaravaneras in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with phone +34 928 93 35 71 and email [email protected].
