Space Machines Company (SMC) is an Australian space technology company founded in 2019 by Rajat Kulshrestha and George Freney. Headquartered in Botany, Sydney, with offices in Adelaide, Bengaluru, and Denver, SMC designs and operates Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTVs) to provide in-space logistics, satellite deployment, and on-orbit servicing. Its flagship product, Optimus-1, launched in March 2023 as the largest commercial satellite built in Australia.
Optimus functions as a taxi service in orbit, repositioning payloads from launch insertion orbits to final operational orbits across LEO, GEO, and cislunar space. SMC targets commercial satellite operators and government customers including Australia's Defence Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA), which awarded the company a A$2.9 million contract for the Space Threat Analysis and Response System (STARS). The company also holds bilateral contracts with the UK Space Agency under the UK-Australia Space Bridge program.
