Silana GmbH is a Vienna, Austria-based robotics startup founded in 2022 by CEO Michael Hofmannrichter, COO Michael Mayr, and CTO Anton Wohlgemuth. The company develops autonomous sewing robots to fully automate garment production, eliminating the last remaining manual step in textile manufacturing: sewing.
The flagship product is SiBot, a modular autonomous sewing system that Silana describes as the world's first machine capable of replacing human sewers end-to-end, from roll of fabric to finished garment, without human intervention. The system uses robotics, AI, and machine vision to handle fabric separation, positioning, and sewing across three-dimensional profiles. Specialized control software monitors fabric properties in real time to precisely regulate sewing head speed and thread tension, adapting to material variability.
SiBot's modular design allows integration into existing factory layouts. The system supports different robots for each sub-process: material separation, fabric fixturing, and the sewing operation itself. Silana reports that SiBot is approximately 4 times faster than skilled human sewers, 12 to 15 times more efficient per unit labor input, reduces production costs by 38%, cuts CO2 emissions by 90% (through near-shoring versus transoceanic shipping), and reduces defect rates by 90%.
As of 2024, nearly 200 SiBot machines had been pre-ordered by garment manufacturers worldwide, with total projected annual capacity of 30 million T-shirts. Co-founder Michael Mayr comes from the founding family of Fussl Modestrasse, an Austrian retail chain operating over 200 stores. CTO Anton Wohlgemuth previously served as a research scientist at TU Vienna specializing in software and hardware engineering.
In May 2024, Silana closed a EUR 1.5 million seed round led by SOSV, the DeepTech venture fund, with participation through the HAX hardware accelerator program in New York. The company's mission includes enabling European garment producers to reshore manufacturing, reducing dependence on long transoceanic supply chains.
