CAS robotics institute founded in 1958 that incubated SIASUN; its space automation lab supplies mechanisms and robots for the space station and Chang'e.
The Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is a national research institute founded in 1958 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. Its main research directions are robotics, intelligent manufacturing and opto-electronic information technology. The institute has more than 1,400 staff, including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 600 senior technical staff, and operates two campuses, on Chuangxin Road in Hunnan District and Nanta Street in Shenhe District. Often described as the cradle of China's robotics industry, SIA has incubated more than ten high-tech companies, including SIASUN Robot & Automation and the semiconductor equipment maker Kingsemi. It hosts the State Key Laboratory of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, the National Engineering Research Center for Robotics, the National Robot Innovation Center and the National Robot Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Liaoning), and publishes the journals Robot and Information and Control.
SIA works across industrial robots, underwater robots, space robotics, special robots, wireless sensing and robotized process equipment. Its marine robotics departments build deep-sea vehicles, and the institute took part in the Fendouzhe full-ocean-depth crewed submersible project, which won a National Science and Technology Progress Award special prize.
Space work is concentrated in the Center for Space Automation Technology and Systems (Space Automation Technology Laboratory), which researches intelligent autonomy and robotics for space and aviation. According to the institute, the lab has undertaken tasks for China's crewed space program, the lunar exploration program, experimental satellites and deep-space exploration. Its listed research topics include a space station science experiment platform, satellite deployable structures and mechanisms, on-orbit servicing robot technology and lunar surface exploration robot technology. Its expertise covers space robots, autonomous-system architecture and control, intelligent fault diagnosis and health management, space mechanism and structure design, remote-sensing platforms, and space-system test and verification. The institute states that systems from the lab, including a cell-level micromanipulation robot system, a multi-degree-of-freedom high-precision pointing mechanism, satellite solar panels and lightweight high-load experiment rack structures, have been used to support the China Space Station, the Chang'e lunar program, a series of experimental satellites and an asteroid sample collection and return program.
Staff profiles of the lab's deputy director also cite a CAS key-deployment project on a space robot arm, a CAS project on a new low-impact space release mechanism, and a panoramic camera turntable for phase III of the Chang'e program, together with published research on trajectory planning for space telerobots capturing debris. Outside space, the same lab develops robot-assisted friction stir welding equipment for large thin-walled structures and inspection robots for ultra-high-voltage transmission lines. SIA provides details of its space robotics products only on request, so model names and specifications are not publicly listed.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Multi-degree-of-freedom high-precision pointing mechanism from SIA's space automation lab, used in support of China's Chang'e lunar exploration program.
Cell-level micromanipulation robot system developed by SIA's space automation lab and used to support experiments on China's crewed space station.
New low-impact release mechanism for spacecraft deployables developed under a CAS project led by the lab's deputy director.
