K.A. Schmersal GmbH & Co. KG is a machine safety and industrial switchgear manufacturer headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany. Founded in 1945 by the brothers Kurt Andreas and Ernst Schmersal, the company moved from lift components into mechanical switching devices in 1947 and into machine switchgear in the 1960s. It remains family-owned and managed, led by Heinz Schmersal, Philip Schmersal and Michael Ambros.
The Schmersal Group produces around 18,000 different switching devices. Product families include AZ215/AZ216 and AZ315/AZ316 safety switches and solenoid interlocks, PROTECT PSC1 and PROTECT SELECT safety controllers, safety light curtains and light grids, emergency stop devices, the BDF 40 control panel, foot switches, safety mats and edges, ATEX explosion-proof switches and fieldbus safety over AS-Interface Safety, SD-Interface and IO-Link Safety, plus time-of-flight cameras for automation. The tec.nicum subsidiary provides manufacturer-neutral safety consulting and retrofit engineering.
The group employs about 2,000 people, runs eight production sites in Wuppertal, Wettenberg, Muehldorf and Bergisch Gladbach plus Boituva (Brazil), Shanghai, Ranjangaon (India) and Indianapolis, and sells in more than 60 countries. Acquisitions include Elan Schaltelemente (1997) and Safety Control GmbH (2008).
