Salin 247 is an agricultural robotics startup based at the BioCentury Research Farm incubator west of Ames, Iowa, run by Iowa State University. It was founded in 2021 by CEO Dave Krog, an Iowa State graduate in agronomy and economics, together with mechanical engineering lead Ben Krog and software lead Saeed Arabi. The company name refers to its goal of running field machines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Salin 247 builds small, lightweight, autonomous electric planters, cultivators and applicators that work without a tractor. The platform is a tracked drive unit carrying a toolbar, batteries, computers and GPS, with planter components from Precision Planting and Ag Leader. The planter can be swapped for a boom and tank for spraying or liquid fertilizer, including Y-drop nitrogen side-dressing in corn. Machines follow GPS with pre-mapped field data such as drainage intakes and terraces. Reporting in 2022 described a prototype with a 10 kW battery running more than an hour per charge, which could pair with a generator for up to 12 hours. The company says the design reduces soil compaction, allows earlier field entry after rain and lowers fixed machinery costs by an estimated 25 to 35 percent.
A prototype planted a 40-acre test field in Boone County, Iowa, in 2021. Proof-of-concept trials on corn and soybean farms in Iowa and Tennessee followed in 2022, and by 2025 the machines had been tested on 50 fields in seven states over three seasons. The Iowa Soybean Association has supported its on-farm research. Trade media have described the business model as farming-as-a-service. Planned additions include mobile docking stations for refilling seed and inputs and AI-assisted camera monitoring.
