Company Overview

Rokoko (Rokoko Electronics ApS) is a Copenhagen company that makes wearable motion-capture hardware and software. Its systems use inertial and electromagnetic sensors, so they need no cameras or markers. The company also offers camera-based AI motion capture. It was founded in 2014 by Jakob Balslev (CEO), Matias Sondergaard and Anders Klok. The founders had studied at the National Film School of Denmark and wanted professional motion-capture tools for making live animated content. The first product, Smartsuit Pro, started as a Kickstarter campaign and was unveiled in December 2016. The company says it has shipped to more than 100 countries.

The hardware line starts with the Smartsuit Pro II, a full-body suit with 9DOF IMU sensors, 200 fps capture, orientation accuracy of plus or minus 1 degree, 16g accelerometers, a WiFi tracking range of 100 m and a built-in hotspot for offline use; it is powered by an external 5V/3A USB power bank and runs about 6 hours on 10,000 mAh. Smartgloves II carry seven sensors per glove, using IMU and electromagnetic-field (EMF) sensor fusion with 250 Hz IMU capture and TCP-based WiFi streaming, and the company says they produce low-latency output suitable for teleoperation. Coil Pro, priced at $2,995, is a hybrid EMF/IMU device that adds drift-free absolute root positioning within a 2-4 m radius (up to 5 m with fallback). Headcam and Headrig are head-mounted rigs for face capture. These devices combine into Full Performance Capture bundles for body, fingers and face.

The software line includes Rokoko Studio, recording, retargeting and streaming software with plugins for Unreal, Unity, Blender, Maya, MotionBuilder and Houdini; Rokoko Vision, camera-based AI motion capture; Rokoko Create; and a Motion Library of animation assets.

Rokoko markets its hardware to robotics researchers for three uses: real-time teleoperation, collecting robot training data (for example, reach, grasp and place motions for manipulation tasks) and dexterous manipulation research. Its Device SDK runs on Linux (Ubuntu LTS) and gives raw data access over USB streaming. Exports are available in BVH, FBX and CSV, and the company cites compatibility with MoveIt, Isaac and MuJoCo. ROS/ROS2 plugins are listed as on the development roadmap. The gloves can be combined with optical systems from OptiTrack, Qualisys and MOVIN. Named robotics users include Stanford University, ETH Zurich, the University of Toronto, Foundation Robotics and the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society, which uses Rokoko for humanoid teleoperation. In entertainment, the company names customers including Disney, Netflix, HBO, Sony, EA, Square Enix, Universal Studios, Roblox and Framestore. Rokoko exhibited at IROS 2026.

The company is headquartered at Sankt Gertruds Straede 10, Copenhagen. It has entities in Athens, Greece (Rokoko Electronics PC) and San Francisco, USA (Rokoko Electronics Inc, 166 Geary St., 15th Floor), and it also has a presence in Los Angeles. The company had about 100 employees in 2021.

Rokoko is venture-backed. Existing lead investors include VF Venture (Vaekstfonden) and North-East Venture. In August 2022 it raised a $3M strategic round led by Naver Z, the company behind the Zepeto avatar app, at a valuation of more than $80M. That round also included Thomas Visti, formerly of Universal Robots and MiR. TechCrunch reported at the time that Rokoko had been profitable for the whole of the previous year and had more than 50,000 users worldwide.
