RND Automation is a U.S.-based custom automation engineering company founded in 2005 by Sean Dotson, Doug Robertson, and Bruce Naylor. The founders purchased the custom automation and robotics division of the former Aidlin Automation — which itself traced roots to 1957 — when its parent Sidel Group closed its Bradenton, Florida facility. RND Automation is headquartered at 3155 Lakewood Ranch Blvd #110, Lakewood Ranch, Florida 34211.
The company is an Authorized System Integrator for FANUC Robotics, a Platinum Level Certified System Integrator for Epson Robotics, and a Certified System Integrator for Universal Robots. In 2017, FANUC named RND its Innovate System of the Year — an award voted on by peers and competitors. In 2011, the company was named Autodesk Inventor of the Year.
RND Automation's capabilities span three core platforms. The Robotics platform covers robotic assembly workcells, vision-guided robotics, and Universal Cell flexible systems. The Packaging platform — expanded through RND's 2018 acquisition of MDC Packaging Machinery — includes horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal machines (HFFS/VFFS), tray sealers, blister sealers, thermoformers, and leak testers under brand names MiniPack, MiniPack XL, KANGA Poucher, MicroPack, MediSeal, TrayPack, and SureVac. The Assembly platform includes machine vision and inspection systems, rotary dial indexing machines, modular assembly platforms, and robotic welding cells.
In 2018 RND relocated all operations to a purpose-built 35,000 sq ft facility in Lakewood Ranch, FL. In 2020, the company was acquired by Saw Mill Capital, a private equity firm based in Briarcliff Manor, New York, which targets businesses with enterprise values of $25–$200 million.
Primary industries served include medical devices, pharmaceutical packaging, consumer products, durable goods, life sciences, electronics, aerospace and defense, and automotive. The company employs a team of approximately 49 engineers, technicians, designers, programmers, and support staff. Executive Managing Director Aaron Laine leads operations; co-founder Doug Robertson remains active as Senior Mechanical Designer.
