RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems GmbH is an Austrian precision LiDAR manufacturer founded in 1978 by Dr. Johannes Riegl, who studied radar and communications engineering at the Vienna University of Technology before launching the company in Horn, Lower Austria, approximately 85 km northwest of Vienna. RIEGL is recognized globally as one of the foremost developers of pulsed time-of-flight LiDAR technology, distinguished from phase-based systems by its ability to resolve multiple returns per laser pulse and operate across multiple wavelengths. The company designs, develops, and manufactures laser scanners for terrestrial, mobile, unmanned, airborne, bathymetric, and industrial applications.
Product families include: Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS) such as the VZ-400i for high-resolution static and kinematic ground-based surveying; Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) systems including the VMY-1 and VMY-2 compact dual-scanner systems for vehicle-mounted mapping; Airborne Laser Scanners (ALS) including the VQ-780 II-S for wide-area high-altitude mapping; UAV-based scanners (ULS) in the miniVUX series for lightweight drone integration; Bathymetric Laser Scanners (BLS) using green laser pulses for underwater depth measurement; and Industrial Laser Scanners (ILS) for factory automation and quality control. RIEGL also produces companion software tools for point cloud processing and data management. The company's VMR Robotic Rail Scanning System represents an autonomous mobile mapping solution for railroad infrastructure inspection.
RIEGL's sensors are widely adopted for autonomous vehicle development, HD mapping, infrastructure inspection, forestry, and geospatial survey. The RIEGL Group employs more than 320 people worldwide, with research, development, and production concentrated at the Horn headquarters encompassing over 74,000 square feet of workspace.
