Company Overview

Ras Labs, Inc., founded in 2003 by Dr. Lenore Rasmussen and headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts, invents and manufactures Synthetic Muscle™ — electroactive polymer (EAP) materials and actuators that contract and expand in response to low-voltage electricity, mimicking biological muscle. The technology senses gentle touch through high impact, operates at battery-level voltages, and withstands extreme temperatures from −271°C to over 135°C with proven radiation resistance. Applications span robotic grippers and linkages, prosthetic liners and sockets, humanoid end-effectors, ear buds, footwear, and athletic/protective gear.

Ras Labs collaborated with NASA and CASIS to test Synthetic Muscle on the International Space Station for a full year. The company also develops Tactile Fingertip technology to give robots a human-like sense of touch. CEO is Peter Vicars; Lenore Rasmussen serves as Founder and CTO.
