Rapid Micro Biosystems is a Lowell, Massachusetts-based life science automation company founded in 2006 by Dr. Don Straus, an experienced molecular biologist and genomics pioneer. For environmental monitoring and bioburden testing, the system delivers results significantly faster than conventional compendial methods. The Growth Direct Rapid Sterility application — announced for upcoming availability in 2024 — accelerates sterility testing by detecting microbial growth in as little as 12 hours and delivering final results in 1 to 3 days, compared to 14 days for traditional culture-based methods. This dramatically reduces the risk of releasing contaminated product and enables faster batch disposition decisions.
The platform supports a fully digital, data-integrity-compliant workflow and integrates with pharmaceutical laboratory information management systems. Manufacturing takes place in a 37,000 sq ft validated ISO 8 cleanroom facility in Lowell. CEO Rob Spignesi, appointed in October 2014, previously served as VP and General Manager, Americas, for Thermo Fisher Scientific's Microbiology Division.
