POSCO Holdings' construction unit that ran Korea's first field test of a remote-controlled excavator, operated 5 km away, with HD Hyundai XiteSolution in 2025.
POSCO E&C Co., Ltd. (legal English name POSCO Eco & Challenge Co., Ltd., formerly POSCO Engineering & Construction) is the construction and engineering subsidiary of POSCO Holdings, which held 52.8% of its shares as of August 2025; The Saudi Asian Investment Company, linked to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, held 38.0%. The company is unlisted. Its registered head office is at 307 Jungheung-ro, Buk-gu, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and its operating headquarters is in Songdo, Incheon. It took its current form in December 1994, when POSCO's engineering and construction functions were combined, and was renamed POSCO Engineering & Construction in 2002 before adopting the POSCO E&C name. It had 5,897 employees at the end of 2024 and sells apartments under the THE SHARP and HAUTERRE brands.
Construction robotics and automation. POSCO E&C began robotics collaboration with the HD Hyundai group in 2023 under a construction-automation agreement. On 4 November 2025 it carried out, with HD Hyundai XiteSolution, what the companies described as Korea's first field demonstration of a remote-controlled excavator, at the Hwatae-Baekya road project in Yeosu, South Jeolla. The Wolho-do section of the job can only be reached by a boat trip of 10 to 20 minutes or more, and weather had halted work there for more than five days a month on average, so the excavator was operated from a site office about 5 km away. HD Hyundai XiteSolution supplied the remote-controlled excavator and its control system, while POSCO E&C designed the operating process and built the site communication infrastructure. Safety features included a 360-degree around-view camera, proximity radar, warning lights, an AI voice warning and automatic shutdown when a person comes within a set distance, and the machine was used for hazardous breaker work. The partners plan operating manuals and inclusion of the method in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's smart construction standard specifications.
POSCO E&C also uses an AI drone that recognises video and audio at the same time to patrol sites and detect hazards in blind spots, and a crack-analysis system that combines drone photography with in-house vision AI, reaching a reported 90% crack-recognition accuracy, automatically measuring crack width and length and producing heat maps of high-risk cracks on concrete apartment facades, with planned extension to bridges, silos and plant structures. An AI construction weather information system uses IoT sensor data to push real-time risk alerts to locations such as tower-crane tops and concrete-pouring areas.
