Vancouver-based pioneer and global leader in magnetically levitated planar motors for flexible 6-DOF multi-mover product transport.
Planar Motor Incorporated (PMI) is a Canadian technology company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is the pioneer and global leader in magnetically levitated planar motor systems for flexible product transport. The company was co-founded in 2016 by Dr. Xiaodong Lu, formerly of the University of British Columbia, together with former students Rui Chen and Kevin Yao Xiao, and in 2017 it launched the world's first commercial planar motor products.
PMI's core technology drives its XBot smart conveying robot systems, which are made up of one or more levitating movers (XBots) operating above a stationary surface called a Flyway built from modular stators. The XBots levitate using magnetic forces and move with six degrees of freedom, enabling independent, multi-directional and contactless motion. Because the movers float above the surface and the system has no internal moving parts, it generates zero particulate contamination and is essentially maintenance-free, making it well suited for cleanroom, semiconductor, life-science, electronics and precision-assembly environments. Production lines built on the platform are highly scalable and reconfigurable, adapting quickly to changing demand and product mix. The company offers 3-Series and 4-Series product families, including S3 and S4 Flyway stators and M3 and M4 XBots, with forced-air and liquid-cooled options. Planar Motor employs a team of more than 60 people and supplies its systems to customers in over 30 countries and regions across North America, Europe and Asia.
Its technology has been integrated into automation platforms offered by partners in the industrial-automation sector.
