Parallel Systems is a Los Angeles, California-based company developing autonomous, battery-electric rail vehicles designed to move freight more cleanly, faster, safer and more cost-effectively than conventional trains or trucks. Founded in 2020 by former SpaceX engineers, including CEO Matt Soule, the company re-imagines the railcar as an individually powered, self-propelled unit rather than a passive car pulled by a locomotive. Each vehicle uses a battery-electric traction-motor propulsion system and a bi-directional, camera-based perception system for autonomous and remote operation. The vehicles couple together to form platoons of up to 50 cars, joining and splitting dynamically to use rail network capacity efficiently and reduce energy consumption.
Parallel's second-generation vehicle, its first ground-up clean-sheet design, carries a single standard intermodal shipping container with payloads up to 70,000 lb (about 58,000 kg), offers a range of roughly 500 miles, and can recharge in as little as one hour. The system is engineered to integrate with the existing North American rail network alongside conventional freight, targeting short-haul and first/last-mile lanes that are difficult to serve economically with full trains. Initial pilot deployments operate under human supervision while the autonomy stack continues to learn and improve. The company has raised venture funding, including a $38 million Series B round, to advance vehicle development and customer testing on U.S. and international railways, with a long-term goal of decarbonizing rail freight.
