"Gas Stations in Space"
Lafayette, Colorado startup founded 2018; builds in-space refueling infrastructure including RAFTI ports, RAVEN shuttle, and NEST orbital propellant depots.
Orbit Fab, Inc. is an American aerospace infrastructure company founded in 2018 and headquartered in Lafayette, Colorado, USA, with additional facilities in the United Kingdom. The company was co-founded by Daniel Faber and Jeremy Schiel with the mission to eliminate the single-use spacecraft paradigm through commercial in-space refueling services.
Orbit Fab's core technology is the Rapidly Attachable Fuel Transfer Interface (RAFTI), a standardized docking and transfer port that spacecraft manufacturers can integrate before launch. RAFTI features two valve cores supporting the transfer of two independent fluid types, is compatible with a wide range of storable propellants including hydrazine and High Test Peroxide (HTP), and is available in multiple pressure variants. The interface is priced at USD 30,000 per unit and has been flight-qualified for both in-space and launch-site fueling operations. RAFTI has been adopted as an industry standard by multiple spacecraft operators and has secured commercial and U.S. Government fuel delivery service contracts.
The company has achieved several milestones: it resupplied water to the International Space Station and, in June 2021, launched the Tanker-001 Tenzing, the first commercial fuel depot placed into low Earth orbit containing the RAFTI interface and HTP propellant.
Orbit Fab's product roadmap includes two further systems: the RAVEN Shuttle, a mobile refueling vehicle capable of carrying 150 to 200 kilograms of propellant equipped with the GRIP active interface combining rendezvous, proximity operations and docking, precision propulsion, grappling, and fluid transfer; and the NEST Depot, an on-orbit fuel storage station designed to store larger propellant quantities and resupply RAVEN shuttles, intended to be deployed as distributed networks across multiple orbital regimes.
A first in-orbit refueling demonstration mission is planned for 2026 under the ASTRAL initiative, with a follow-on in 2028. Orbit Fab has contracted to supply up to 2,200 pounds of xenon in GEO in partnership with Astroscale's LEXI servicer. The company's customers include commercial satellite operators and U.S. government agencies seeking to extend the operational life of on-orbit spacecraft assets.
