Brooklyn-founded (2009) 3D-printer maker acquired by Stratasys in 2013 and merged with Ultimaker in 2022; now an education-focused sub-brand.
MakerBot Industries, LLC was founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, New York, by Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer and Zach Smith, building early desktop 3D printers on the open-source RepRap design. Stratasys acquired the company in 2013, and in August 2022 MakerBot merged with fellow 3D-printer maker Ultimaker; MakerBot now operates as an education-focused sub-brand of the combined company, UltiMaker.
Under UltiMaker, MakerBot's current lineup is built for the classroom: the Sketch Standard and Sketch Sprint desktop 3D printers, plus access to UltiMaker's S3 and S6 printers, run on PLA and Tough PLA filament and are managed through UltiMaker Digital Factory and Cura software. The company also created and continues to support Thingiverse, an online repository for shared 3D-printable design files, and maintains a Thingiverse Education community alongside more than 600 published classroom lesson plans and an educator's guidebook.
MakerBot states its printers and curriculum are used in more than 10,000 schools. The brand's earlier consumer and prosumer product lines, including the Thing-O-Matic, Replicator and Replicator 2, are no longer part of its current, education-only positioning.
