Palo Alto AI home security camera startup that used 3D sensing and deep learning for person recognition; shut down in December 2018.
Lighthouse AI was a Palo Alto, California-based startup founded in 2014 by Alex Teichman and Hendrik Dahlkamp, both Stanford computer science researchers who previously worked on self-driving car perception systems. The company developed an AI-powered home security camera that combined a time-of-flight 3D depth sensor with cloud-based deep learning to distinguish between people, pets, and objects, and to recognize specific individuals by name. The camera supported voice commands and proactive alerts via text or voice message.
Lighthouse raised approximately $20 million from investors including Playground Ventures, Eclipse Ventures, SignalFire, and Sebastian Thrun. Emerging from stealth in May 2017, the $299 camera failed to achieve sufficient commercial adoption. Lighthouse AI shut down in December 2018 and refunded camera purchases.
Several of the company's computer vision patents were subsequently acquired by Apple.
