Norwegian state-controlled technology and defence group; after the April 2026 maritime demerger it holds Defence & Aerospace and Discovery, incl. HUGIN AUVs.
KONGSBERG, legally Kongsberg Gruppen ASA, is a Norwegian technology and defence group based in the town of Kongsberg. It traces to 1814 and the founding of Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk, the state weapons factory, and has been listed in Oslo since 1993. The Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries holds 50.004 per cent, so the state is the controlling shareholder.
Its shape changed fundamentally on 22 April 2026, when a demerger approved by shareholders in January 2026 split the group in two. Kongsberg Maritime was spun out as Kongsberg Maritime ASA and began trading separately on Euronext Oslo Bors on 23 April 2026 under KMAR, with one new share issued per existing KONGSBERG share. What remains under Kongsberg Gruppen ASA and the KOG ticker is a technology and defence company formed by consolidating Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace with Kongsberg Discovery.
Defence & Aerospace covers missiles, command and control, communications, surveillance and space services, and includes the Protector remote weapon station, a remotely operated turret rather than an autonomous system. Kongsberg Discovery holds the subsea and ocean-sensing side, including sonar and the HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle family, developed from a 1996 prototype, and its MUNIN successor. These AUVs are the group's clearest robotics line: long-endurance untethered vehicles used for naval work, hydrographic survey, search and recovery, and offshore inspection.
One historical point matters for anyone reading older records. REMUS, the AUV family originating at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, reached Kongsberg through its 2008 purchase of Hydroid, but Kongsberg sold Hydroid to Huntington Ingalls Industries in 2020. REMUS has not been a Kongsberg product for six years, and sources that still attribute it to Kongsberg are out of date.
