Kiro Robotics

Kiro Robotics (operating as Kiro Grifols SL) is a Spanish medical robotics company established in 2010 as a spin-off of MONDRAGON Health, the specialist health unit of Mondragon Corporation, based in Mondragon (Basque Country), Spain. The company specializes in developing robotic systems to automate IV drug-compounding processes in hospital pharmacies.

In September 2014, Grifols, the global healthcare company headquartered in Barcelona, acquired an initial 50% stake in Kiro Robotics for 21 million euros. Grifols subsequently acquired an additional 40% stake for approximately 12.8 million euros, bringing its ownership to approximately 90%. The company is now branded and operated as Kiro Grifols.

Kiro's primary product is the KIRO Oncology robot, an aseptic compounding robotic system that automates the preparation of intravenous chemotherapy medications, significantly reducing exposure risk for pharmacy staff handling cytotoxic substances. The system is engineered for precision, flexibility, and regulatory compliance in sterile compounding environments. Additional products include KIRO SP, which handles non-hazardous compounded sterile preparations, and KIRO Fill, an automated compounding device designed to optimize efficiencies in non-hazardous IV compounding.

The KIRO Oncology system has been adopted by major institutions including Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, Hospital Clinic Barcelona, Vall d'Hebron Hospital Barcelona, Hotel Dieu in Paris, and Helsinki University Hospital in Finland. The robot features a proprietary calibration needle system for sterile needle management within the closed robotic environment.

Kiro Grifols competes in the hospital pharmacy automation segment alongside companies like B. Braun, which also distributes the KIRO Oncology system in certain markets.
