Company Overview

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. was founded in September 1948 by Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa and is headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. Honda Robotics is the company's robotics research program, built on decades of humanoid and mobility research. Its best-known result, the ASIMO humanoid robot introduced in 2000, operated for more than two decades and accumulated over 33 million steps across its units before Honda retired the line to focus research elsewhere.

Following ASIMO, Honda shifted from pursuing a single general-purpose humanoid toward robots built for specific functions. The Honda Avatar Robot is designed for remote task performance, using a multi-fingered hand and remote-operation controls so an operator can carry out physical tasks from a distant location. The Honda Walking Assist Device is a wearable hip-support device developed for gait training and rehabilitation use. UNI-ONE is a hands-free, seated personal mobility device built on balance-control and omnidirectional-drive technology Honda originally developed for its bipedal robots, giving seated users independent mobility indoors and in pedestrian spaces.

Honda Robotics organizes its current research around two goals: extending human capability through automation and remote operation, and enabling people to work in environments that are dangerous or otherwise hard to reach.
