Company Overview

HENSOLDT AG is a German defense electronics company headquartered in Taufkirchen near Munich. It became a standalone company in 2017 when Airbus's defense electronics business was carved out, and it carries the name of the optics maker Hensoldt, whose heritage goes back more than 125 years. HENSOLDT develops radars, optronics, electronic warfare, avionics and command-and-control software for land, air, sea, cyber and space, and describes itself as a sensor provider evolving into a systems integrator built around software-defined defense. Its systems fly or sail on aircraft, ships, submarines, armored vehicles, satellites and unmanned platforms.

Counter-drone defense is the business most relevant to robotics. HENSOLDT says it has been building counter-UAS (C-UAS) solutions for more than ten years, including protection of the 2015 G7 summit at Schloss Elmau. Its earlier Xpeller product family, launched in a deployable Xpeller Rapid version at ILA 2018, combined radar, cameras, RF detectors, direction finders and jammers to detect drones from a few hundred meters to several kilometers and cut the link between drone and pilot. The current line is sold under the Elysion name:

  • Elysion C-UAS Mission Core: the C4I software at the center of HENSOLDT's C-UAS systems, with sensor data fusion, automatic prioritization of high-risk targets, an integrated video feed, an open interface for new sensors and effectors, and PC and tablet versions.
  • Elysion C-UxS Flexible Site Protection: tripod-mounted sensors and effectors for protecting large areas such as military airbases, run by a single operator.
  • Elysion C-UxS Shelterised Asset Protection: a container-based system against small UAS under 25 kg, for deployed camps and high-value sites.

HENSOLDT is the contractor for ASUL, the Bundeswehr's modular counter-small-UAS system. ASUL was developed by HENSOLDT subsidiary ESG and handed over to the German Armed Forces in 2022. Its sensors were upgraded in 2025 with the latest SPEXER radar, and in January 2026 the BAAINBw ordered kinetic effectors: KONGSBERG weapon stations in 10-foot containers. Until then ASUL had relied on soft-kill measures. Also in January 2026, HENSOLDT signed an MoU with Munich-based TYTAN Technologies to integrate TYTAN's interceptor drones into Elysion Mission Core for C-UAS and critical-infrastructure protection.

Sensors used for drone detection and on uncrewed aircraft include the SPEXER 2000 3D MKIII X-band pulse-Doppler radar (land and naval versions, used for border protection, C-UAS and ground-based air defense), the TRS-4D naval radar, PrecISR X-band GaN AESA airborne surveillance radars, ARGOS electro-optical gimbals for manned and unmanned aircraft, and Lygarion line-of-sight data links for RPAS, MALE UAVs and VTOL platforms. The wider portfolio also covers the TRML-4D air surveillance and target acquisition radar, Twinvis passive radar, Eurofighter radar and EW content, PEGASUS airborne SIGINT, self-protection suites such as AMPS and MILDS, vehicle optronics for the Leopard 2 and Luchs 2, submarine optronics, and MDOcore for multi-domain operations.

HENSOLDT has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Prime Standard, ticker HAG, ISIN DE000HAG0005) since 25 September 2020 and is a member of the MDAX. Its main shareholders are the Federal Republic of Germany (about 25.1%) and Leonardo S.p.A. (about 22.8%). In fiscal 2025 the group reported revenue of EUR 2,455 million, record order intake of EUR 4,710 million, an order backlog of EUR 8,833 million and adjusted EBITDA of EUR 452 million. It has around 9,500-10,000 employees following its acquisition of ESG. Oliver Doerre is CEO. Group entities hold ISO 9001, EN 9100, AQAP 2310 and ISO 14001 certificates, and the Multi-Domain Solutions division is approved under EASA Part 21J, Part 21G and Part 145.
