Headwall (Headwall Photonics, Inc.) is headquartered at 580 Main Street in Bolton, Massachusetts. It traces its origin to August 2003, when a management buyout separated the diffraction-grating business from Agilent Technologies to form the company. Headwall now operates as part of Headwall Group, backed since a January 2022 recapitalization by private equity firm Arsenal Capital Partners.
The company designs and manufactures hyperspectral imaging sensors built on diffractive-optics technology carried over from its Agilent-era grating operations. Its product lines fall into three categories: industrial inspection systems, including production-line hyperspectral cameras and metal-detection sensors; benchtop hyperspectral toolkits for laboratory research and quality control; and remote-sensing payloads for drones, aircraft, and portable field deployment. The sensors capture data across contiguous VNIR, NIR, and SWIR wavelength bands, allowing materials to be identified and sorted by spectral signature rather than color alone, with applications in food processing, recycling and material sorting, precision agriculture, and environmental and defense-related remote sensing.
Since the 2022 recapitalization, Headwall Group has grown through acquisitions including inno-spec GmbH and the addition of EVK, extending its sensor-technology base beyond the original Bolton site while keeping Bolton as its headquarters.
