GS Engineering & Construction Corp. (GS E&C) is a South Korean construction and engineering company founded in 1969 and listed on the Korea Exchange (KRX: 006360). It is headquartered at Gran Seoul, 33 Jong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The company works in five areas: plant EPC, notably oil, gas and petrochemical facilities with a strong Middle East presence; building and housing under the Xi apartment brand; infrastructure, including roads, rail, water, ports and privately financed projects; leisure facilities such as resorts, hotels and sports and cultural venues; and prefab construction, covering modular and timber housing.
Construction robotics. GS E&C was the first contractor in South Korea to put Boston Dynamics' Spot quadruped robot to work on construction sites, in 2020. Working with construction software startup Cupix, it fitted Spot with LiDAR, 360-degree cameras and IoT sensors and ran field tests at an apartment site in Seongnam, where the robot walked autonomously through units while underground parking and interior finishing were under way, and at a new performance hall site in Seoul, where it captured temporary works. The data was merged with 3D BIM to check interference with later electrical and mechanical work and to support safety planning. GS E&C named pre-occupancy defect inspections at apartments, progress and quality reviews at bridge sites and, with added sensors, hazardous-gas detection and thermal imaging as target uses.
On 5 June 2026 GS E&C signed a research and development agreement at its R&D Center in Seocho-dong, Seoul, with Daedong Robotics, the AI robotics affiliate of the Daedong Group, to automate construction sites with AI field robots. The programme starts with field trials of Daedong's autonomous mobile robot on live sites, verifying performance and safety in stages, and then moves to co-developing robot models optimised for construction, with an initial focus on material transport, repetitive tasks and heavy-load movement. GS E&C provides site operating experience, test sites and operator requirements, while Daedong contributes autonomous-driving and spatial-perception technology first developed for agriculture.
The company's wider digital-construction work includes AI-based fire prediction that runs thousands of virtual fire tests on digital building models, and the Xi Voice AI translation tool used to communicate with foreign workers on site.
