"The Smart Primary Mobility Aid"
Seattle startup behind Glide, a self-steering sensor-guided mobility robot that walks blind and low-vision users around obstacles
Glidance, Inc. is a US robotics company founded in 2023 and based in Seattle, Washington. It was founded by Amos Miller, its CEO, who lost his sight in his twenties to retinitis pigmentosa, spent more than 15 years as a product executive at Microsoft Research where he founded the Soundscape navigation app, and previously chaired the board of Guide Dogs for the Blind in the UK.
Its single product, Glide, is a self-guiding mobility device for blind and low-vision users, positioned by the company as a primary mobility aid and priced at USD 1,499 with a subscription service. The user holds an adjustable telescoping handle and nudges the device forward; Glide then steers, using cameras and sensors to avoid obstacles, describe surroundings and deliver tactile, haptic and audio cues through the handle. It runs on two all-terrain wheels with a built-in kickstand and is designed for all-day battery life. The company credits patent-pending Agentic Wayfinding technology, which it says learns as a fleet to navigate complex pedestrian spaces without depending on mapping, localisation or infrastructure, with software updated over the air. Navigation modes include predetermined routes, map integration and line-of-sight targets. Reporting notes the wheels steer but are not powered, so the user supplies forward motion.
Glidance has raised about USD 1.66 million, including an oversubscribed USD 1.5 million pre-seed announced in July 2024 from Grep VC, Prota Ventures, Greenwood & Cavalier, St. John's Community Service, Alliance of Angels and TiE Oregon Angels, and a later USD 130,000 angel round involving the North Texas Angel Network and Cowtown Angels. It won the 2023 RoboBusiness Pitchfire competition, a 2024 RBR50 Robotics Innovation Award, a gold Edison Award for Assistive Technologies in 2024 and the SXSW 2025 Pitch Competition.
