Atlanta, Georgia warehouse-automation integrator rooted in a 1946 Reading, Pennsylvania firm; builds conveyor and robotics systems with its FORTNA WES software.
FORTNA traces its origins to H. E. Fortna Brothers Inc., a material handling equipment business established in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1946. The company is now headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and operates as a systems integrator and software provider for warehouse and distribution center automation. Thomas H. Lee Partners took a majority stake in 2019; in August 2026 FORTNA agreed to a debt restructuring cutting its funded debt by about 1.8 billion dollars and transferring majority ownership to a lender group led by Ares Management.
FORTNA designs and installs conveyor systems, sortation equipment, robotic picking cells, and autonomous mobile robots for e-commerce, retail, food and beverage, and industrial distribution operations. Its software portfolio includes FORTNA WES, a warehouse execution system that coordinates automation equipment and order workflows in real time; FORTNA WCS, vendor-agnostic controls software for material handling equipment; and FORTNA OptiSlot DC, a slotting-optimization application.
In 2022, FORTNA combined with Material Handling Systems (MHS) to bring both companies' automation and software businesses under the FORTNA brand. Between 2020 and 2022 it also acquired Pierau Planung, eMotion Controls, TGW's US conveyor business, and slotting-software firm Optricity.
