Electroadhesive clutches and brakes that are 10x lighter, 10x more compact, and 1000x more efficient than conventional electromagnetic actuators.
ESTAT Actuation develops electroadhesive clutch and brake hardware for robotics and physical AI applications. The company's core technology uses electrostatic adhesion to "glue" and "unglue" surfaces: applying voltage across load-bearing capacitor electrodes accumulates opposing charges that lock the clutch, while removing the voltage disengages it. Because the devices behave as capacitors, they require only microamp-level maintenance current (under 10 uA) to stay engaged. ESTAT positions its clutches as 10x lighter, 10x more compact, and 1000x more efficient than conventional electromagnetic clutches, with no magnets and a US-based supply chain.
The product line includes the UltraSlim Rotary Clutch, UltraSlim Linear Brake, and Flexible Tensile Clutch, plus supporting electronics such as a battery-powered voltage driver and an isolated voltage driver with digital control, and an evaluation kit. The rotary clutch is modular: each clutch module adds 4 Nm of holding capacity and roughly 1.2 mm of thickness, with units rated at 12, 24 and 36 Nm (US-12, US-24, US-36) and a single-module US-4 demo unit. Target customers include OEMs, system integrators, AGV and AMR builders, collaborative robot makers, and aerospace actuator developers. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, ESTAT works with partners including Carnegie Mellon University, the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, and the Pittsburgh Robotics Network, and has received support from the NSF SBIR/STTR program, NSF I-Corps, and AFWERX.
