Company Overview

EdgeTech is a US manufacturer of underwater acoustic systems, based in West Wareham, Massachusetts. Its products include side scan sonars, sub-bottom profilers, bathymetry systems, combined sonars, sonar payloads for unmanned underwater and surface vehicles, acoustic releases and transponders, and on-demand (ropeless) fishing systems. The company traces its origins to 1965, when it began as a division of EG&G Marine Instruments. It became a private company in 1995 and chose the EdgeTech name partly to honour the late Dr. Edgerton, an MIT professor, marine instrumentation pioneer and EG&G co-founder. In 2012 ORE Offshore, a maker of acoustic releases, transponders and USBL systems that had operated as an affiliate within the company for more than ten years, adopted the EdgeTech name. EdgeTech marked its 60th year in 2026. The main office is at 4 Little Brook Road in West Wareham, and a second office is in Boca Raton, Florida. In-house test facilities include test pools, acoustic test tanks, pressure chambers and two company research vessels for sea trials.

For marine robotics, EdgeTech is a long-standing supplier of sonar payloads to third-party vehicle builders:

  • 2205: a modular sonar for AUVs/UUVs, ROVs and USVs that can collect side scan imagery (75 to 1,600 kHz), sub-bottom profiles (500 Hz to 24 kHz) and swath bathymetry, singly or together. A tri-frequency 230/540/1,600 kHz option is available. It is delivered either in its own pressure vessel or as board-level electronics for integration inside the host vehicle's housing, with depth ratings up to 6,000 m. EdgeTech says the 2205 has been installed on hundreds of unmanned underwater vehicles, ROVs and USVs. It can record on its own or interoperate with the vehicle autonomy during a mission.
  • Trace: launched in March 2026 as a small-form-factor OEM side scan sonar for micro-UUVs, small ROVs, compact USVs and gliders. The electronics measure 13 x 7 cm and draw 7 to 10 W from 12 to 24 VDC. It offers dual-frequency pairs of 540/1,600, 540/850 or 850/1,600 kHz, an Ethernet interface and an API so data can be streamed to and stored on the host.
  • eBOSS (Buried Object Sonar System): a low-frequency (5 to 25 kHz) sub-bottom sonar that uses synthetic aperture processing to render 3D images of buried objects. It was originally developed for unexploded ordnance detection, including 155 mm projectiles, and is available on towed vehicles such as the MacArtney FOCUS 3 and EIVA ScanFish as well as ROVs, AUVs and ASVs.

Towed and vessel-mounted survey sonars include:

  • 4125i: an ultra-high-resolution portable side scan aimed at search and recovery. A 4125i located a Rockwell Jet Commander that had been missing in Lake Champlain since 1971; EdgeTech reported the find in May 2024.
  • 4205: a tri-frequency, motion-tolerant side scan sonar.
  • 6205s2: the fourth-generation combined bathymetry and dual-frequency side scan system. It uses EdgeTech's Multi-Phase Echo Sounder (MPES) technique, which combines beamforming and phase differencing, for swaths of more than 200 degrees, with data compliant with IHO SP-44 Special Order.
  • 2050 and 2300 combined systems, plus the 3400 portable and pole-mounted 3400-OTS sub-bottom profilers. Common technologies across the range include Full Spectrum CHIRP processing, multi-pulse operation, dynamically focused arrays and EdgeTech's Discover acquisition software.

The acoustic release and positioning line, inherited from ORE Offshore, covers the 8242XS release transponder and the PORT family (LF, LF-SD, MFE push-off, strong-back and pop-up recovery). It also includes the CAT coastal acoustic transponder, the 8011M acoustic transceiver, the PACS portable acoustic command system and the BRT6000 burn-wire activator. The 5112 on-demand (ropeless) fishing system is paired with the Trap Tracker app; the 5112 has been approved for California Dungeness crab fishing during closures. Custom engineering covers under-ice navigation and mapping, ROTV pipeline inspection and products for defense and security.

EdgeTech lists its markets as oil, gas and offshore renewables; fisheries, science and research; police, fire and search and recovery; defense and security, including mine countermeasures and rapid environmental assessment; hydrographic survey; and protection of underwater critical infrastructure. A related company, EdgeTech Instruments, sells moisture and humidity products under a separate website.
