Huntingfield, Tasmania firm founded 2005 making UAV engines, EFI, ESCs and CAN servos; supplied 700+ EFI systems for Honeywell's T-Hawk.
Currawong Engineering Pty Ltd is an Australian maker of propulsion, power and actuation components for uncrewed aircraft, based at 54 Patriarch Drive in Huntingfield, south of Hobart, Tasmania. Gavin Brett founded the company on 13 February 2005 after relocating to Tasmania, and it marked 20 years in business in October 2025. It designs and manufactures small UAV engines with its own electronic fuel injection, electronic speed controllers, CAN-bus servos and hybrid power electronics, and also sells CNC machining, engine testing and engineering consulting services.
Its first work was with Cloud Cap Technology of the US, designing and manufacturing the TASE series of camera gimbals from 2005. In 2009 it began developing EFI for UAV engines and won a contract to supply Honeywell's T-Hawk micro air vehicle, delivering more than 700 systems. The Corvid-29 engine followed in 2013, developed with Cobra Aero and Power4Flight, and completed the 150-hour endurance test specified in US FAR Part 33. Servos, ESCs and a CAN hub were added in 2015, the Corvid-50 engine in 2017 and DroneCAN protocol support in 2021. In 2018 the company moved into a larger factory officially opened by the head of the Tasmanian state government, and in 2020 it received a A$150,000 CDIC Global Defence Competitiveness Grant to expand electronics production.
The Corvid-50 is a 50 cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine producing 2.8 kW at 7,000 rpm. It weighs 3.89 kg including generator, low-noise exhaust, isolation mount, EFI and power system, provides 250 W of generator output, has a 350-hour TBO and suits aircraft with a typical MTOW of 30 to 40 kg. A Cortex Heavy Fuel 50cc hybrid engine was announced in 2022, along with heavy-fuel development work with VP Racing Fuels. The Velocity ESC family runs from the XS (4.5 kW, 75 g) to the HC (15 kW, 250 A sustained), all supporting DroneCAN, ArduPilot, Quattro and Piccolo. The CBS-15 and CBS-20 CAN servos deliver up to 0.75 Nm and 2.7 Nm of torque. The Cortex Hybrid Power System, in MQ (up to 750 W) and MX (up to 1,500 W) versions, manages generator and battery power in hybrid aircraft. Accessories include engine control units, fuel injectors and pumps, ignition, power supplies, temperature sensors, CAN2PWM adapters and the TouCAN kit, configured with the company's CEquip software.
Named customers include Threod Systems of Estonia, which flies the Corvid-50 in its Stream UAV; Silvertone Electronics of Australia and Sky Eye Systems of Italy, which use the Corvid-29; Fuji-Imvac of Japan, which uses its EFI; and AVT Australia, which buys machined parts. The company has supplied follow-on ESC batches for AeroVironment's JUMP-20, its ESCs and servos fly on the PteroDynamics Transwing, and it has a product integration with the autopilot maker Embention. Its quality system has been audited by Tier 1 military customers, every engine and module is tested before shipping, and each product ships with a certificate of conformance.
