University of Tokyo spin-off founded 2023 in Tokyo making tactile sensing, haptic devices and touch-data tools for robot imitation learning; NEDO NEP pick 2026.
commissure Inc. (Kabushiki Kaisha commissure) is a Tokyo start-up that develops tactile and force sensing, haptic feedback hardware and data tools, and during 2026 has concentrated that work on supplying touch data for robot learning and physical AI. It was established in January 2023 by its two co-representative directors: Mizohashi, the chief executive, whose earlier career included Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Nomura Securities, CyberAgent and Salesforce Japan, and Arata Horie, the chief technology officer, who earned a PhD at the University of Tokyo for research on embodiment-based tactile presentation and is a specially appointed assistant professor at the university's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology. Professor Masahiko Inami of the University of Tokyo joined as scientific founder in November 2023. The company is housed in the collaborative research building on the university's Komaba II campus in Meguro, Tokyo.
Its technical premise is that robots now have cameras and AI models but lack usable touch data for contact-heavy tasks such as grasping, pressing and fitting. The company's patented approach records tactile and force signals from sensors mounted on robots and on the human body, time-synchronised with video and joint data, stores human demonstrations and robot experience in one sensor-independent format with quantitative quality checks, and feeds the result into imitation-learning pipelines. Products include SenseFuse, a wearable that combines force myography and vibration sensing to record where and how hard a person applies force (in development); HaptoConnect, middleware that standardises data formats and time synchronisation across different tactile sensors for robot learning (in development); FeelFuse, a wearable that returns force sensations to the hand for haptic teleoperation and XR; the FeelFuse SDK for Unity and ROS 2; HaptoScala, a multi-channel haptic presentation platform; Chainy, a chair-type whole-body haptic device; and HaptoAI, a diffusion model that generates tactile signals from natural language, presented at EuroHaptics 2026.
In 2026 the company added offerings aimed at robot developers and adopters: Awesome UMI, a catalogue of UMI-style handheld devices for collecting imitation-learning data (June); Tactile Arena, a catalogue of robot tactile sensors (August); a UMI data acquisition service that converts human work into robot training data (28 August); and corporate Physical AI training with courses on theory, deployment and PoC design, collaborative robots and humanoids (25 August). On 1 September 2026 its add-on tactile integration platform for physical-AI imitation learning was selected for the NEDO NEP Breakthrough Course 3000 programme. It joined the NVIDIA Inception Program in January 2025 and exhibited at CES 2025.
Earlier work centred on human experience design, including a digital craft-skill transfer project shown at Expo 2025 Osaka and joint research with PLUS Corporation on tactile technology for workspaces; research with its technical cooperation received the Best Demo Award at EuroHaptics 2024. Logos of Nissan, NTT docomo, Toyota Boshoku, Teijin, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mizuno and AIST appear on its website without the nature of each relationship being stated.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Wearable combining FMG muscle and vibration sensing to record human force for robot learning.
Middleware linking diverse tactile sensors to robot learning pipelines with common data format and time sync.
Wearable haptic device returning real-time force sensations to the hand for haptic teleoperation and XR.
