DENSO-owned Dutch builder, with roots in 1896, of turnkey greenhouses and indoor farms, offering Gronos fully automated cherry tomato growing, seed to harvest.
Certhon is a Dutch horticultural technology company based in Poeldijk, in the Westland greenhouse region. It started as a family business in 1896 and today advises on, designs and builds turnkey, tailor-made horticultural facilities for growers, investors and researchers. John van der Sande is named as founder and CINO, and Lotte van Rijn was named General Director at the time of the DENSO acquisition.
Japanese automotive supplier DENSO formed a capital alliance with Certhon in March 2020, and in May 2020 the two set up DENSO AgriTech Solutions, Inc. to sell horticultural facility products in Japan and other Asian countries. In August 2023 DENSO announced that it had acquired the full stake in Certhon Group, with the aim of combining its automotive process design and automation technologies with Certhon's cultivation and greenhouse system know-how to address labour shortages and climate-related production instability.
Certhon's offering includes turnkey high-tech greenhouses, indoor farming facilities with climate-independent year-round growing, and autonomous growing. Its Gronos concept for loose cherry tomatoes automates sowing, transplanting, spacing and harvesting, with robots and smart systems moving crops through the greenhouse so that no manual plant handling is needed from seed to harvest. Plants grow to about 40 cm in custom NFT gutters without pruning or training, support sticks are removed automatically and a dedicated machine picks the tomatoes, with a crop cycle of 15 weeks. Other products are the Certhon Control System (CCS) for technical installations such as heat pumps, aquifers, climate chambers and irrigation, the JSK cooling system, the SuprimAir greenhouse system and Thevi yield prediction. Reference projects include a research facility for SESVanderHave in Belgium, growth chambers for Rijk Zwaan, the YouYou production greenhouse in Shanghai and a solar-heated greenhouse for Tesselaar. Certhon holds ISO 9001, HortiQ, NEN-EN 1090-1 and BRL6000-21 certifications.
