Founded in 1979 by Erwin Bernecker and Josef Rainer, B&R has grown to become one of the world's leading providers of machine and factory automation technology. In 2017, ABB (Asea Brown Boveri Ltd.) acquired B&R, making it ABB's global center for machine and factory automation; today B&R is a wholly-owned subsidiary via B&R Holding GmbH, operating as a dedicated division within ABB Automation.
The company employs more than 3,400 people (as of the time of acquisition, growing significantly since) across more than 200 global offices. B&R's core product portfolio spans industrial hardware and software: the X20 System is a modular I/O and PLC platform for machine automation combining standard and safety functions in a unified architecture; the ACOPOS servo drive family provides multi-axis motion control for high-precision manufacturing equipment, with the ACOPOS P3 and ACOPOS X2 as recent additions; Automation Studio is the integrated software development environment used to program all B&R controllers, drives, and HMIs; and APROL is B&R's distributed control system (DCS) for process industries such as oil, gas, energy, and water treatment, featuring OPC UA-based interfaces. B&R also develops open industrial Ethernet standards including POWERLINK and safety protocol openSAFETY.
The company serves machine builders, OEMs, and system integrators across automotive, food and beverage, packaging, printing, plastics, and energy industries.
