Company Overview

Beijing Harmonic Drive Technology Research Institute, which uses the brand abbreviation BHDI on its website, is one of the earliest Chinese organisations dedicated to harmonic gear transmission. According to its company profile, it was founded in 1983 as the Applied Technology Research Institute of the Logistics Department of the PLA Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and has since focused on harmonic drive research, the manufacture and supply of harmonic reducers, and related engineering services. The institute states that in 1993 it led the drafting of the Chinese national standard for harmonic gear reducers, GB/T 14118-93, which set the basic technical framework for the domestic industry.

The institute's history is closely tied to robotics. Among the awards it lists, a high-precision harmonic reducer for industrial robots received a national new product award in 1991, and its standard series of single-stage harmonic gear reducers received a second-class National Science and Technology Progress Award and a first-class Science and Technology Progress Award from the electronics industry. Its XB series high-precision harmonic reducers also won a gold award at a defence-to-civilian high-technology and export products fair.

The current catalogue is organised into several families. The XB1 cup-type series is offered both as complete reducer units with motor kits, in horizontal and vertical mounting versions, and as component sets, including Oldham-coupling (cross-slider) component sets. The XBD short-cup series includes short circular-spline component sets, XBD-A long circular-spline sets and XBD-B sets with an integrated crossed-roller bearing, each also available with slider couplings. The XB2 and XB6 double-wave series cover compound harmonic designs for higher ratios, and the XB3 ring-type series includes XB3-1 and XB3-2 component sets and an XB3-2 phase adjuster used in printing and packaging machinery. The published performance tables for the XB1 and XBD series run from frame size 25 to 250; at frame size 25, for example, the ratios listed are 41, 50, 63 and 125. Across its product range the institute says it covers reduction ratios from about 30 up to 150,000, including both low-ratio units (30 to 50) and very high-ratio units.

Beyond standard reducers, the institute provides selection calculations, application consulting, electromechanical design, process guidance and full control-scheme design and programming support. It has also developed dedicated system control boards, DC motor driver boards and network communication boards, and builds special-purpose equipment to customer requirements. It states that its products serve aerospace, aviation, medical equipment and university teaching, alongside printing, packaging, general machinery and artificial-intelligence equipment.

For the RobotToday humanoid and embodied-AI landscape, the institute is included in the joints, actuators and transmission segment as one of the historical domestic sources of harmonic reducers, the precision gearboxes widely used in robot joints. Its official contact page gives a Mentougou District, Beijing address together with a mobile number and a consumer email address, which suggests a small operation.
