Aaronia AG is a German manufacturer of radio-frequency measurement equipment and RF-based drone detection and defence systems, based in Strickscheid, Rhineland-Palatinate. Founded in 2003, the company began in spectrum analysis and RF shielding; in 2008 it launched a handheld spectrum analyzer that it promotes as reaching a displayed average noise level of -170 dBm. Aaronia states that its products are developed, manufactured, tested and calibrated in Germany at its campus in Strickscheid. Founder Thorsten Chmielus leads the company as CEO.
Its counter-drone product line, AARTOS, was developed from 2013 and has been in operational use since 2015. The sixth generation, released in 2019, paired the system with the IsoLog 3D direction-finding antenna so that it can determine both the position and the altitude of an incoming drone. Aaronia reports more than 650 AARTOS installations worldwide as of 2026, up from over 600 at the end of 2024.
AARTOS DDS (Drone Detection System) is offered in three main configurations, all capable of real-time monitoring across the spectrum and of fixed or vehicle-mounted operation. AARTOS X2 covers 2.4-5.8 GHz with an omnidirectional antenna and around 5 km detection range against consumer drones. AARTOS X7 covers 700 MHz-6 GHz with eight antenna sectors, typical bearing accuracy of 5-6 degrees and a sweep speed of 3 THz/s. AARTOS X9 covers 400 MHz-6 GHz (optionally 10 MHz-8 GHz), uses 16 sectors with 1-3 degree accuracy and up to 6 THz/s sweep speed, decodes drone protocols and is quoted at 14 km detection range against commercial drones, 40 km in a long-range version and up to 80 km against military UAVs. Trade press reports that the X2 and X7 are mostly used by police and security services, while the X9 targets military threats including multi-frequency swarms.
The system is built as a closed loop from sensing to electronic attack. RTSA Suite PRO software performs near real-time wideband spectrum analysis, automatic protocol identification, signal classification and threat visualisation, and Aaronia positions it as a basis for SIGINT and electronic warfare work. AI-based RF pattern and image recognition supports classification. For defeat, Aaronia offers a programmable 360-degree Smart Jammer that disrupts defined frequency bands or sectors to neutralise non-cooperative UAVs, and AARTOS can integrate third-party radars, electro-optical sensors and jammers.
Newer additions extend the line beyond ground stations. AARTOS Hawk uses time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) geolocation over 10 MHz to 6/8 GHz or 9 kHz to 18 GHz in a package of under 5 kg including analyzer, PC and antenna. At Eurosatory in June 2026 Aaronia launched AARTOS Hawk T1, an airborne drone detection and RF geolocation system for tracking drones and their operators from the air. In August 2026 the company announced a single order worth over EUR 72 million from an unnamed customer covering AARTOS X9 and the first Hawk-TDOA systems.
Aaronia opened an Austrian subsidiary at Vienna-Voeslau airport in 2023, led by former Austrian Armed Forces officer Stephan Kraschansky, who now serves as the company's Chief Defense and Government Solutions Officer. Alongside AARTOS, Aaronia continues to sell spectrum analyzers, signal generators, antennas and EMC/RF measurement products to industrial and laboratory users.
