1. Why This List
Robotics has a canon; robot service does not. The ten universities Robotics Service Framework benchmarked — CMU, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, ETH Zurich, Georgia Tech, UMich, TUM, Oxford, USC — teach kinematics, control, perception and learning. None offers a course on keeping deployed robots running. The books their students read were written for people who design robots, not for the engineers who install, diagnose and repair them.
This list answers a practical question: if you are building a career in robot service, which ten books repay your time, and how should you read them? Candidates come from three pools — robotics fundamentals, mechatronics and maintenance, and service management. Ranking reflects value to a service engineer at RSF Professional level, not academic prestige. That is why Bolton outranks Craig.
2. Method
Each book is scored 1–5 on four dimensions, then weighted: Total = A + 1.5×B + 2×C + D, maximum 27.5. (A) Adoption across the ten benchmark universities (×1), from the RSF v2.5 curriculum analysis; (B) coverage of the RSF four-layer model and eight modules (×1.5); (C) practical value for field service and fault diagnosis (×2) — the heart of this list; (D) difficulty fit for the Professional tier, associate-degree entry level (×1). Ties are broken, in order, by higher C, then higher A, then higher D.
Open access is tagged, not scored: whether a book is free changes how you get it, not what it is worth to your work. Methodology v1 scored open access as a dimension of its own; v2 demoted it to a tag, and the four scored dimensions were relettered A–D accordingly. Free resources are flagged throughout and listed separately below.
The matrix is decision support, not gospel, and the ranking should be re-checked against current university syllabi before public release.

One-line verdicts
1. Mechatronics (7th ed.) — The service engineer’s home turf: sensors, signals, actuators, PLCs — with algebra-level math and a dedicated fault-finding chapter.
2. ITIL Foundation: ITIL 4 Edition — Where SLA, escalation and service-lifecycle vocabulary comes from; knowing it is a major head start for Modules 1 and 8. This list cites ITIL 4; a Version 5 followed in 2026 and ITIL 4 remains valid in parallel.
3. Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots (2nd ed.) — AMR fleets are today’s largest robot service market. This is the manual behind every AMR vendor manual.
4. Industrial Robotics Fundamentals (4th ed.) — The only book on this list written for the shop floor: installation, safety, operation and maintenance procedures.
5. Robotics, Vision and Control (3rd ed., Python) — Theory you can run: every concept ships as executable Python. The bridge from reading about robots to poking at one.
6. Introduction to Robotics: Mechanics and Control (4th ed.) — Adopted by six of the ten benchmark universities. The shared vocabulary of kinematics — and it has an official Chinese translation.
7. Probabilistic Robotics — Why perception fails and how to reason about it. Read for the mindset; skip the derivations at Professional tier.
8. Modern Robotics — The free, rigorous foundation for kinematics and dynamics. Read selectively — the concepts, not the proofs.
9. A Gentle Introduction to ROS — The fastest path to reading robot logs and node graphs. ROS 1-era, so pair it with current ROS 2 material.
10. Springer Handbook of Robotics (2nd ed.) — Not for cover-to-cover reading. The reference of record when a fault crosses domains and vendor docs run out.

Six books missed the Top 10 only because they are form-specific or math-heavy. They become essential the moment you specialize in a robot form under Module 7, or move up to the Specialist tier. They are numbered S1–S6 and each has its own article, in the same six-part format as the Top 10.
