HOUSTON—(BUSINESS WIRE)—The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Persona AI have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop inspection technologies using humanoid robots, aiming to transform productivity and safety in shipyard operations.
The partnership will adapt Persona AI’s humanoid robots—drawing on NASA’s robotic hand technology—for a variety of shipyard tasks. Unlike traditional industrial machines, humanoid robots are designed to operate in environments built for people, giving them the flexibility and mobility needed to navigate confined or ergonomically challenging spaces.
Under the agreement, ABS and Persona AI will launch a series of joint projects to collect data during ship construction, laying the groundwork for classification and certification in robotic inspection. The collaboration will also inform new ABS standards on the quality and types of data required for digital and remote survey techniques—guidelines that could shape future robot design as well as the broader use of robotic data for compliance.
