US maker of Syntro, a 45-DoF omni-wheeled humanoid built in Louisville, Kentucky, sold in Base, Telepresence (VR teleoperation) and Intelligent packages.
WorkFar Inc., which also presents itself as WorkFar Technologies and WorkFar Robotics, is a US company that designs, manufactures and services the Syntro humanoid robot and offers automation integration and contract manufacturing alongside it. The company says Syntro is made in the USA, and its online store states that the robot is produced at Advantage Plastics in Louisville, Kentucky; WorkFar describes its manufacturing as nearly entirely in-house across several US facilities that are ISO 9001:2015 certified. Its published mailing address is in Dover, Delaware. Press coverage from 2024 reports that WorkFar has not taken venture capital and has grown on its own revenue, and that its manufacturing facility has more than 40 years of experience producing plastic and metal parts.
Syntro is a wheeled humanoid: an anthropomorphic upper body with two arms and dexterous hands mounted on a base with three omnidirectional wheels. According to the official specification it is 1.7 m tall and 0.64 m wide, weighs 108 kg and carries a 20 kg payload. It has 45 degrees of freedom: 2 in the head, 4 in each arm, 3 in each wrist, 12 in each hand, 2 in the waist and 3 in the wheel base. It uses Maxon motors and Harmonic Drive gearing, senses with 2D LiDAR, cameras, computer vision and microphones, runs custom Linux with ROS 2 on an Intel Core i5 computer, connects over Wi-Fi 6 and 5G LTE, and is powered by swappable 1.2 kWh batteries giving 6 to 10 hours of run time. The structure uses aluminium, stainless and carbon steel, brass, acetal and carbon-fibre filament.
The robot is sold in three packages. Syntro Base is the robot with an SDK and core perception, motion and safety functions, aimed at entry-level use, development and education. The Telepresence package adds live teleoperation and shared autonomy through a VR headset, gloves, suit and pedals with HD audio and video, intended for work in dangerous areas and clean rooms and for collecting AI training data; 2024 coverage describes VR eye tracking used to target objects and haptic gloves that give the operator grasp feedback. The Intelligent package adds onboard AI, fleet management and IoT integration under a WorkFar Intelligence licence key. The store lists packages from 9,999.99 to 59,999.99 US dollars, with quoted lead times of about 6 months for Base and 12 months for the Telepresence and Intelligent versions, and offers financing, installation, training and service. In 2024 the company also promoted monthly leasing of a robot together with a trained remote operator, with no down payment.
Target uses named by WorkFar include machine tending and loading, inventory and material handling, end-effector tasks, clean-room and hazardous-area work, and telepresence, across manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, medical and pharmaceutical, hospitality and retail. Beyond the robot, WorkFar provides custom automation systems and robotic cells, industrial controls and integration, fulfilment systems integrated with WMS and WCS, 2D/3D vision, HMI and SCADA, machine design, electrical cabinet design and conventional industrial robots, cobots and AMRs. Its manufacturing services for outside customers cover CNC machining, sheet-metal fabrication, plastic injection moulding including insert moulding and overmoulding, in-house mould and tool building, and value-added assembly. The company recruits system integrators, manufacturers' representatives and machinery distributors as channel partners.
