WindBorne Systems is a weather-technology company headquartered in Redwood City (Redwood Shores), California, founded in 2019 out of the Stanford Student Space Initiative.
The company operates Atlas, a network of altitude-controlled, autonomous long-duration weather balloons that it describes as the largest balloon constellation in the world. WindBorne launches hundreds of these balloons each month; each unit performs on the order of 50 controlled vertical profiles over a multi-week flight, collecting continuous atmospheric sounding data from the surface into the stratosphere. Alongside the balloon network, WindBorne develops WeatherMesh, a transformer-based AI global weather-forecasting model trained on the company's own atmospheric observations.
Organizations using WindBorne's atmospheric data or WeatherMesh forecasts include the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the Gates Foundation, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The company has raised $37 million in funding, with Khosla Ventures among its investors.
