Riga-based developer of WeedBot Lumina, a modular single-plant laser weeding implement for 3-15 vegetable ridges with up to 2 mm precision.
WeedBot (SIA WeedBot) is a Latvian agricultural technology company in Riga that develops high-precision laser weeding equipment for vegetable farms. Its systems use optical sensors to identify weeds and a directed laser beam to destroy them individually, removing the need for herbicides or hand weeding around the crop.
The current product, WeedBot Lumina, is a single-plant laser weeding system built as a modular implement covering 3 to 15 ridges. It works at up to 600 m/h, with a higher stated figure of 1,500 m/h, is powered by a PTO-driven generator, and is specified with precision of up to 2 mm. Carrots are the primary crop, with other crops available since 2023.
The team is led by CEO Janis Jasko, with Vitalijs Osadcuks (lead electronics engineer), Vilnis Pirs (lead mechanical engineer), Aldis Pecka (CTO, mechatronics) and Andrejs Kostromins (CTO, software); Alan Barrell and Karlis Cerbulis sit on the advisory board. Investors include Cambridge AgriTech, Latban and Overkill, and the company has been supported by the EIT Food Accelerator Network. The general manager of UK organic grower RBOrganic has said that the grower invested in WeedBot because of rising labour costs and weed pressure.
From April 2026 to September 2027 WeedBot is a partner in an EU-co-funded research project led by the Latvian Food Competence Centre to develop a modular, high-power laser weeding system for vegetable growing and bring it to demonstration readiness under real conditions; the project budget is EUR 320,260, of which EUR 224,244 is EU funding.
