VOLIRO (Voliro AG) is a Zurich-based aerial robotics company and ETH Zurich spinoff founded in 2019. Originally developed within ETH Zurich's Autonomous Systems Lab as part of the Wyss Zurich accelerator platform — a joint initiative of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich — VOLIRO commercializes advanced flying inspection robots designed to perform non-destructive testing (NDT) and contact-based maintenance on hard-to-reach industrial infrastructure.
The company's flagship product, the Voliro T, features a patented omnidirectional platform with a 360° tiltable rotor system. This technology enables the drone to approach, touch, and interact with structures such as flare stacks, storage tanks, wind turbine blades, and transmission towers while maintaining stable flight — shifting aerial robots from 'fly and see' to 'fly, see, and touch.' The platform supports inspection modalities including ultrasonic thickness measurement and other NDT methods, and can be deployed without scaffolding, rope access, or manual entry into confined spaces.
VOLIRO operates on a B2B subscription model that bundles drone hardware, software, firmware updates, operator training, and crash insurance into a recurring service contract. The company reports more than 100 contact inspections conducted monthly and 40+ enterprise customers in 17 countries, including Chevron, Holcim, and Acuren. In the wind energy segment, its drones enable lightning protection system inspections up to five times faster than conventional methods, reducing inspection costs by up to 50%.
Funding history: VOLIRO closed a CHF 2 million seed round in 2020 led by Alpana Ventures; a USD 12 million Series A in 2024 led by Cherry Ventures; and a USD 23 million Series A extension in June 2025 led by noa Ventures, bringing total disclosed funding to approximately USD 27.7 million. The company is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.
