Shanghai visuo-tactile sensor maker founded by MIT GelSight co-inventor Li Rui; its GF-series fingertip sensors run on Xiaomi phone assembly lines.
Shanghai ViTai Technology Co., Ltd., trading as ViTai Robotics (Weitai Robotics in Chinese transliteration), is a Shanghai start-up that develops vision-based tactile (visuo-tactile) sensors and the grippers, dexterous-hand modules and software built around them. It was founded in January 2024 by Li Rui, who has researched robotics and computer vision since 2005 and completed his PhD at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory under Edward Adelson, the professor behind GelSight sensing. Li is credited as a co-inventor of the fingertip GelSight sensor and says he built the first visuo-tactile sensor with spatial resolution finer than a human fingertip. Its website also references a Suzhou affiliate.
Visuo-tactile sensors use a small camera to image the deformation of a soft elastomer contact surface, giving high-resolution measurements of contact geometry, pressure distribution, shear and slip. ViTai's product line, as described by the founder in 2026, includes:
Target tasks are adaptive grasping of objects that vary in size, hardness and surface, contact-rich operations such as precise placement, plugging and unplugging connectors, assembly and screw driving, and handling deformable items such as cloth, cables and delicate food. Xiaomi has publicly disclosed using ViTai's technology in parts of its smartphone production lines for high-precision assembly, and press reports say an unnamed dexterous-hand maker valued at more than RMB 10 billion has adopted ViTai's fingertip solution for its latest hand. Other customers are embodied-AI robot companies buying two-finger and five-finger sensors, research institutes and model teams buying data-collection kits, and manufacturers in consumer electronics, automotive, home appliances and new energy.
ViTai has raised money in several rounds. In April 2025 it announced angel and angel+ rounds totalling nearly RMB 100 million: the angel round was led by Xiaomi Strategic Investment with Kuanqiao Hengsong, YaRui Capital, Plum Ventures (Meihua), Glimmer Capital (Weiguang) and iCANX Fund, and the angel+ round was led by Vertex Ventures. Xiaomi's Hanxing Venture Capital added to its stake in August 2025. On 29 June 2026 the company announced a Pre-A round led by Redbird Navigation Fund with Lingyi Investment, Yongxin Ark, Weihao Chuangxin, Ningbo Jide and the Shanghai Angel Association, its third round in a year, bringing total funding to several hundred million yuan. Proceeds are going to sensor miniaturisation, resolution, sampling rate and precision, and to grippers, dexterous hands and hand-eye coordination systems for general-purpose humanoid robots. Li Rui spoke at the Milken Institute Global Investors' Symposium in Hong Kong in 2026.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Camera-based tactile sensors that mount on parallel grippers to measure contact shape, pressure and shear for precise placement and assembly.
Fingertip-sized visuo-tactile sensor that adds high-resolution touch to five-finger dexterous robot hands.
Tactile data-acquisition equipment and model closed loop sold to research institutes and embodied-AI model teams.
