Wessling, Germany DLR spinoff founded 2024; builds patented MPTC controller software for safe, high-speed human-robot collaboration.
Versatile Robotics GmbH is a German robotics software company headquartered at Claude-Dornier-Strasse 1 in Wessling, Bavaria. The company was founded in 2024 as a spin-off of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) by Johannes Englsberger, Stefanie Brandl, Ulrich Kohler, and Adrian Prinz, with support from the EXIST research transfer program and the ESA Business Incubation Centre.
Its core product is a robot controller software platform built around a patented Modular Passive Tracking Controller (MPTC), which lets a robotic arm move quickly and precisely while remaining compliant enough that contact with a person stays safe. The controller is designed to run on hardware from different robot manufacturers rather than a single proprietary arm, and it draws on more than a decade of DLR research into whole-body and humanoid robot control, work reflected in more than 59 papers co-authored by the founding team. Versatile Robotics targets applications in logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare and medical robotics, where robots and people share the same workspace and conventional stiff or heavily derated controllers limit either speed or safety.
As a recently founded DLR spin-off, Versatile Robotics is in early commercialization, working on technology partnerships and pilot integrations with robot manufacturers and system builders across Germany and the wider European robotics sector.
