Los Angeles R&D firm founded 2002 building passive detect-and-avoid, GPS-denied navigation and maritime perception software for UAVs and USVs.
UtopiaCompression Corporation is a Los Angeles research and development company, founded in 2002, that builds perception, navigation and autonomy software for unmanned aircraft, unmanned surface vessels and other autonomous systems. Most of its work is for US Department of Defense customers. It also has offices in Utah (Orem and Pleasant Grove are both named). The company was co-founded by Dr. Jacob Yadegar, chief executive, and Dr. Joseph Yadegar, president. Its advisory board includes Dr. Eric Johnson, director of the Penn State UAS Research Laboratory, and Dr. Randal Beard of Brigham Young University, a researcher in UAV guidance and multi-vehicle control.
Autonomous systems are the main product line. AETHER is a passive detect-and-avoid system for beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight in the National Airspace. It ranges intruder aircraft from monocular cameras, tracks and classifies them, and runs on low-cost off-the-shelf sensors. Co-NAVIGATE addresses last-mile Advanced Air Mobility delivery in urban areas without GPS, using smart landmarks (GeoPulse) and sensor fusion to navigate aerial vehicles. SwarmSync lets UAV swarms of Group I to V aircraft navigate together in GPS-denied conditions, with a single tracker vehicle handing target information to the swarm. CO AIR coordinates UAVs and UGVs without GPS through trajectory prediction and intent estimation. PACER-Geolocate is on-board UAV software that locates a distressed soldier using CurveSYS helmet-mounted sensors. The company quotes 90 to 95 percent accuracy within 20 seconds and demonstrated it at Evasive Warrior 2025 in Alpena, Michigan.
Its visual analytics work feeds the same unmanned systems. SeeSharp is a passive maritime perception system: a 360-degree panoramic camera developed by UtopiaCompression plus a PTZ camera, which detects, tracks, classifies and ranges surface objects in real time. It was developed with radar from Raven Aerostar Technical Solutions and is aimed at Navy unmanned surface vessels. AVIAN is EO/IR airborne video analytics software for ISR and combat search and rescue, and has been flight-tested with US Air Force assets. AeroVision is named as a second payload product but is not described on the site. Smaller business lines outside robotics are Chironalytics training-measurement software, SkyTutor UAV pilot training, and medical diagnostics research on traumatic brain injury and burns.
Most funding comes from government research contracts. The company reports two recently awarded Navy SBIR Phase III integration efforts, which are awaiting Authority to Operate approval for full deployment. SeeSharp and Chironalytics were each rated Awardable on the DoD Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace in 2025. In November 2025 it joined the SDA TAP Lab Catalyst Campus accelerator cohort for space domain awareness. In September 2026 it was one of three winners of the Pitch the Press competition at Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas. Its published research covers passive intruder state estimation for detect-and-avoid, GPS-denied navigation and cooperative localisation.
Primary type & automation activities this supplier delivers:
Passive camera-based detect-and-avoid system for BVLOS operation of autonomous aircraft.
360-degree EO/IR maritime perception system that detects, tracks, classifies and ranges surface objects for USVs.
EO/IR video analytics software that detects and tracks moving targets on land and sea from aircraft.
Landmark-based navigation for last-mile aerial delivery in GPS-denied urban areas.
