Dutch maker of TOR, a camera-guided weeding robot that zaps weeds 2-20 mm with blue diode lasers in carrots, onions and bulbs, without chemicals.
Trabotyx B.V. is a Dutch agricultural robotics company based in Maarssen, near Utrecht, that builds TOR, a chemical-free laser weeding robot for vegetable and bulb growers. The company was started by Tim Kreukniet (CEO) and Mohamed Boussama (CTO), who met at the Antler accelerator in early 2020 and joined the ESA Business Incubation Centre Noordwijk in December 2020. In 2021 it raised EUR 460,000 from the Brabant development agency BOM, angel investors and farmers to bring the robot to market; early development started with carrots and used RTK-GNSS for localisation.
TOR uses a computer-vision camera and AI to tell weeds from crop and fires a blue diode laser at weeds between 2 and 20 mm. It is offered in 1.5 m, 1.8 m and 3 m working widths; each laser can hit up to five weeds per second, and the widest six-laser version covers up to 0.15 ha per hour, powered by a swappable battery lasting up to 10 hours plus a solar panel. The company cites fully autonomous operation with GPS-RTK, about 1.3 ha per day, 91 percent fewer weeds without damage to crop or soil, and more than 3.1 million weeds lasered to date. Target crops include carrots, onions, red beet, parsnips and lilies, and published case studies cover an organic vegetable grower, a bulb grower (tulips, lilies, peonies) and the biodynamic grower Meulwaeter. TOR was launched commercially in June 2025 at two Dutch sites, and Dutch growers could apply for a 25 percent subsidy round in 2026.
