Touch Bionics was a Scottish prosthetics company founded in 2003 as the first business spun out of Scotland's National Health Service. Headquartered in Livingston, it also operated facilities in Germany and the United States and employed more than 120 people at the time the Icelandic orthopedics group Ossur acquired it on April 12, 2016, for 27.5 million pounds (about $39 million); the business now operates as part of Ossur's Touch Solutions division, and the touchbionics.com domain redirects to Ossur's site.
Touch Bionics developed the i-limb, the first commercially available bionic hand with five individually powered fingers, giving each digit independent motorized movement rather than the single-grip action of earlier myoelectric hands. Its range grew to include the i-limb quantum, introduced in 2015, which lets a wearer change grip patterns with a simple gesture of the hand, along with additional myoelectric partial-hand and finger prostheses and a line of passive, cosmetic silicone prosthetic covers. In the year before the acquisition, the company reported revenue of about 15 million pounds, up 11 percent year on year.
