The J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of fifteen departments in the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University, based in College Station, Texas. Texas A&M was founded in 1876 as the state's first public institution of higher education.
The department's graduate program ranks seventh and its undergraduate program sixth among public university mechanical engineering programs nationally, and the subject area ranks third worldwide and first in the United States in ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Faculty research spans energy conversion, combustion, heat transfer, materials science, fluid and solid mechanics, controls, and dynamics, with robotics and autonomous-systems work carried out partly through the Center for Autonomous Vehicle and Sensor Systems (CANVASS) and in collaboration with the Army Futures Command. Other affiliated centers include the Turbomachinery Laboratory, the Energy Systems Laboratory, the Energy Institute, and the Center of Innovation in Mechanics for Design and Manufacturing.
The department enrolls 1,432 undergraduate and 572 graduate students and administers more than 7 million dollars in endowments for graduate fellowships, distributing over 370,000 dollars per year to graduate students.
