Issaquah, Washington agtech firm using drones, AI and the autonomous TerraScout platform to map rocks and weeds; maker of a skid-steer Rock Picker.
TerraClear is a U.S. agricultural technology company that uses robotics and artificial intelligence to map farm fields and turn the results into field plans. The company frames its platform in three steps: Sense, in which imagery is collected robotically; Decide, in which AI models running with edge compute generate prescriptions; and Act, in which mission plans are sent to field teams and equipment. TerraClear was founded in 2017 by Brent Frei, the former CEO of Onyx Software and a co-founder of Smartsheet. Its headquarters is at 1770 NW Maple St. in Issaquah, Washington, with further locations in Grangeville, Idaho; Parkersburg, Iowa; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, plus a Canadian site.
The company's first product was the Rock Picker, a robotic arm implement that mounts on the front of a compact track loader or skid steer and removes rocks with minimal soil disturbance across no-till, seeded, stubble and pasture fields. Press coverage in 2021 reported that it picks an average of 400 rocks per hour and handles rocks of up to 300 pounds. TerraClear Rock Map shows rock locations, sizes and picking progress. The current Rock Management solution maps rock size, density, location and removal paths.
Weed Management identifies weed species, density and chemical effectiveness, detecting weeds of 1/4 inch and larger with real-time image results. Aerial image capture uses a drone, sensor and aerial edge processing system that covers up to 1,000 acres per day and produces a map in under 24 hours. The AI detection models are trained on a proprietary dataset from farms across North America and are maintained through an active-learning review cycle. Plant phenotyping, pest and disease identification and nutrition optimization have been announced as upcoming features. A TerraClear mobile app is available for iOS and Android.
TerraScout, open for early access in 2026, is a fully autonomous field scouting vehicle with onboard compute that generates maps in real time, a ground pressure under 4 PSI, day-and-night operation, coverage of more than 1,000 acres per day and 1 mm ground sample distance.
TerraClear raised $25 million in May 2021, bringing total funding to $38 million; Madrona Venture Group led its Series A. In April 2024 it raised a further $15 million from existing investors. The company sells through authorized resellers and service providers, and its recognitions include RBR50 and AE50.
