Tecan Group Ltd. is a Swiss life sciences automation company founded in 1980 by four engineers in the village of Hombrechtikon, Switzerland, and now headquartered in Männedorf, Switzerland. The company launched its first commercial product, the TECAN 300 microplate reader, in 1982, and has grown into a global provider of laboratory automation instruments, liquid handling robots, and automation platforms for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, clinical diagnostics, and forensics industries. Tecan went public on the Swiss Exchange in 1997 and reported sales of CHF 946 million in 2021.
Tecan's flagship product line centers on liquid handling automation systems, including the Fluent platform — introduced in 2014 as the company's primary liquid handling workstation — and the Veya system launched in 2025, designed for labs seeking a smaller footprint and a more accessible entry point to automation. The company also offers the Cavro OEM component line, providing liquid handling modules to instrument designers and diagnostic equipment manufacturers worldwide. Tecan's platforms are used in drug discovery, genomics, clinical sample preparation, and high-throughput screening applications.
Tecan employs more than 3,500 people globally and maintains production, research, and development sites across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company operates a sales and service network spanning 52 countries. Strategic acquisitions have broadened its capabilities over the decades, including the acquisition of 3M's life sciences division in 2001. Tecan also offers the Labwerx custom automation service, which engineers bespoke laboratory automation solutions for clients with unique workflow requirements.
