Swedish machine-tending robot integrator founded 1998 in Jonkoping; acquired by ABB in 2016; ABB global application centre for CNC machine tending.
SVIA (Svensk Industriautomation AB) was a Swedish robot systems integrator founded in 1998 and headquartered in Jonkoping, Sweden, specialising in automated machine tending solutions for CNC manufacturing environments. The company designed and delivered turnkey automation cells in which industrial robots — primarily ABB models — loaded and unloaded components to and from CNC lathes, milling machines, and secondary processes such as assembly, washing, and part marking. By the time of its acquisition SVIA had built a portfolio of more than 800 machine tending cell solutions serving customers in the automotive, plastics, and electronics sectors, including smartphone manufacturing.
A distinguishing capability was the PickVision vision-guided robotic picking system, which enables flexible, bin-pick-style part feeding without fixed fixtures. ABB announced the acquisition of SVIA in May 2016, integrating the company into the Robotics business unit of ABB's Discrete Automation and Motion division. SVIA subsequently became ABB's global application centre for machine tending.
The brand is preserved under ABB's heritage brand programme. The acquisition gave ABB a broader portfolio of advanced and vision-integrated machine tending applications for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing.
