Tokyo food machinery maker est. 1961; invented the world's first sushi robot in 1981; nigiri, maki, and rice-ball machines in 80 countries.
Suzumo Machinery Co., Ltd. is a Japanese food-processing machinery manufacturer established in 1961 in Tokyo, originally developing equipment for Japanese-style confectionery production. In 1981 the company introduced the world's first automatic sushi-forming machine — commonly termed a 'sushi robot' — following a development initiative launched in 1976 by founder Kisaku Suzuki with the aim of making sushi more affordable by automating rice-ball formation. Suzumo's core products are automated food portioning and forming machines covering nigiri sushi robots (which shape vinegared rice to the same firmness as a skilled chef), maki (roll) cutting machines, rice-ball (onigiri) forming machines, and seasoned-rice mixing systems.
The machines are engineered to replicate the tactile precision of manual preparation while delivering high throughput required by conveyor-belt sushi chains and large-scale catering operations. As of April 2022, Suzumo reported approximately 70,000 customers across roughly 80 countries, with installations at virtually all major sushi restaurant chains in Japan. The company employs approximately 481 people globally, with headquarters in Nakano, Tokyo, and a manufacturing facility in Saitama Prefecture.
Suzumo also operates an international subsidiary, Suzumo International Corporation, serving North American and global markets.
